Look Beyond Your Wall: Discovering Diversity Lenses

This workshop engages students in discussions regarding who we and others around us at Cal are. This is an introduction to an exploration of individual and social identity and how it may shape our experiences at Cal, how students can meet and learn from others' perspectives, and how students can get involved to learn more. We would love to invite students to look beyond the superficial information that they may post on their Facebook wall. Get beyond what we "see" on the surface, and begin to get to know others in a deeper way.

The outcomes of the workshop are:

  • Self-Awareness (social identity)
  • Humanitarianism (awareness of others)
  • Knowledge Acquisition (social group membership, salience of identity, multi-sectionality)
  • Skill building (constructivist listening)
  • Civic Engagement (dialogue)

All of the MEP workshops, including the Look Beyond Your Wall workshop, use experiential learning techniques. The workshop features small and large group interactions and discussions. Further, the workshop uses activities that provide a common experience for the group, and provide ideas for use in everyday work in a diverse environment like Cal. Resources are also discussed, so participants can connect with other offices and opportunities at Cal.  The workshops are approximately two hours in length.
