Sunshine Workman, M.A.

I primarily work with three programs in the Cal Corps Public Service Center.

  • The WT Chan Fellowship Program hosts six students from China in six month service internships with community based organizations throughout the Bay area.
  • The Shinnyo-en Peacebuilding Leadership Program supports and inspires a community of peace makers, by offering workshops, retreats, and trainings that bring the philosophy of this campaign to life in different communities.
  • The Alternative Breaks Program engages students in short-term, community-based service projects over academic breaks.

I am committed to supporting students, staff, and faculty in promoting intercultural understanding and justice within and outside campus. Primarily, my work centers on exploring the intersections between service, leadership, cultural competency, and justice. In the past four years I have coordinated the Blueprint Leadership Development Program, a year-long social justice oriented leadership program for undergraduate students; designed a multicultural leadership program for Recreational Sports through a Berkeley Initiative for Leadership and Diversity; served on the Dean of Student diversity committee; was in the founding year of the Critical Dialogues Across Difference; supported student groups such as the Interfaith Action Initiative; and have led numerous workshops and trainings on dialogue, multicultural competency, power and privilege, and the impact of stereotyping for various groups on campus.

What I am most proud of however, is the relationships I form with under-represented students on campus. Watching them grow as leaders who give back to their communities is my main source of inspiration and the greatest reward of all.
