Workshops and Seminars
At Cal, there are a variety of workshops and seminars sponsored by campus departments and student groups that address issues of diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism. Browse the selection below, choose the one that best meets your needs and contact the sponsoring organization.
All of the MEP workshops use experiential learning techniques. The workshop features small and large group interactions and discussions. Further, the workshops use activities that provide a common experience for groups, and provide ideas for practical, everyday appliation in our diverse community at Cal. Resources are also discussed, so participants can connect with other offices and opportunities at Cal.

Creating Inclusive Classrooms:
This workshop engages faculty and/or academic departments in a discussion regarding how we can take steps to make classroom instruction more active and inclusive - particularly when engaging with issues of human diversity. The outcomes of the workshop are:
- To reveal climate issues
- To examine the costs and benefits of responding to dynamics in the classroom
- To identify resources available to faculty
The workshop is approximately one hour and thirty minutes, depending on the dynamics within the group.

Workshops for Students:
Introduction to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:
This workshop engages students in discussions regarding who we and others around us at Cal are. This is an introduction to an exploration of individual and social identity and how it may shape our experiences at Cal, how students can meet and learn from others' perspectives, and how students can get involved to learn more.
The outcomes of the workshop are:
- Self-Awareness (social identity)
- Humanitarianism (awareness of others)
- Knowledge Acquisition (social group membership, salience of identity, multisectionality)
- Skill building (constructivist listening)
- Civic Engagment (dialogue)

First Take/Second Look: Exploring Unconscious Bias:
This workshop engages staff in a discussions regarding our behaviors that might be problematic for others, as well as what to do about situations where we may be on the receiving end of biased behavior. The workshop features small and large group interactions and discussions. The outcomes of the workshop are:
- To understand what Unconscious Bias is
- To reveal the impacts and consequences of Unconscious Bias
- To review how Unconscious Bias happens here on campus
- To be able to take actions in response to Unconscious Bias
The workshop is approximately two hours, depending on the dynamics within the group.
